Our Gardens - "Dahlia" Garden

This is our newest garden created in the fall of 2020 using the lasagna method and expanded in the fall of 2021 using the same method. It is a sunny location at the corner of the driveway and the public sidewalk. It is on slope and the soil does wash downhill.

It is named the "Dahlia" garden because eight dahlias were planted there the first year. The particular dahlias were chosen because of their advertised 3'-4' height. They actually grew to 5'-6' and were quite intertwined. The dahlias were striking and in a location that attracted significant community attention. From our perspective they were too tall and out of control.

Four tall daylilies were also planted in the garden. We were lucky they survived being overwhelmed by the dahlias. The outside border was planted in unusual petunias and alyssum.

The 2022 plan is to plant annuals that will provide color in late spring/early summer and then again in late summer/early fall.
